Weight loss...hmmmm! This is a topic that is very much apart of my life because I'm not only a coach but a personal trainer. Clients come to me because their main goal is usually to lose weight. But 99% of the people that I see either for coaching or personal training approach this ideal from the wrong angle. I want you to read this blog post with an open mind and don't judge or come up with excuses straight away. Just listen (or read) and give it a try, you may surprise yourself. :: A lot of people think that when they reach a certain weight, that is when they are going to be happy. That is when their life will be at its best. That is when they will feel fulfilled. But that is so wrong...once you get there then you usually want something else and then something else. It is a vicious cycle that never allows you to feel content and happy. I'm not even going to mention the word diet in this blog post because that is a whole other topic I could go on about all day. I want to focus on your thought patterns around what you think weight loss means. Ask yourself these questions and write the answers down... How do you think you will feel when you reach your goal weight? How do you plan to reach that weight? Why are the numbers on the scales so important to you? How do they make me feel? ::
What I want to tell you today is that for you to lose weight, whatever that means for you, you need to look at all the areas in your life. Not just food and physical exercise. Look at your relationships, your career, your spiritual practice and then you can start to look at your nutrition and exercise habits. I've had clients in the past that think coming to see me a couple of times per week and not doing any other work on themselves outside of that, is going to make them lose weight. No matter how many times I asked them about their food, sleep patterns and stress, they always just brushed it off and then wondered why they weren't getting the results that they wanted. I want to give you this, the biggest lesson in health and losing weight...STOP FOCUSING ON THE NUMBER ON THE SCALES. It is only going to drive you crazy and put you in a roller coaster of moods. :: Ask yourself these questions (write the answers down): + Am I happy with all the relationships I have in my life at the moment? Explain. + Am I happy in my current career? Explain. + Do I have a spiritual practice? Do I think I need one? What areas could this help me with? ** Side note, spiritual practice isn't about religion, unless you want it to be. It is meditating, journaling, self-care practices etc. + What are my eating habits like? What emotions are attached to my binge eating or snacking? + What exercise do I really enjoy? What don't I enjoy? How much exercise per week can I really commit to each week? :: When you look at your life in its entirety instead of having tunnel vision of only food and exercise, it will open you up to a whole new way of looking at health and wellness. Weight loss, if you need it, will start to shift on its own when you work on all areas of your life as a package. Stress stops you from losing weight, so when you start stressing about your weight, then what is going to happen? It's not going to budge. You're not going to see results. So take a step back. Take in a deep breath and work on your happiness first and foremost. Both with yourself, as you are right now, as well as all the other aspects and areas around you. Doing things from a place of love is a lot more supportive, calming and the results will come a lot quicker. Approaching health with a mindset of loathing and a lack of self-belief is setting you up for failure. Your ego/mean girl/negative nancy voice is trying to keep you just where you are right now. Humour me, try this approach to health for 3 weeks and see what happens. Report back and let me know how you went and what came up for you. Relax hunnie, health shouldn't be stressful and hateful.
