Last Tuesday night I had the absolute pleasure of attending The Paleo Way event by Pete Evans with amazing scientific facts from Nora Gedgaudas, music by the very talented Wes Carr and hosted by the very funny Luke Hines. It was an amazing and informative event that left me with many thoughts about the whole paleo way of eating and whether it is something for me. Here is what I learnt in dot point facts: + Sugar reacts in the brain the same way cocaine does; + Autism rate has gone from 1:1000 in 1994 to 1:50 in 2014; + Dietary fat is what we need more of (from animal products like meat); + Stop eating grains, wheat, sugar and dairy; + The size of the human brain has decreased by 10% in the past 10,000 years; + Humans are the only species who eat food that their body isn't made to process; + 2/3 adults are overweight or obese; + Weapons of mass destruction = gluten, vegetable oils and sugar; + You can go a long time between meals on a fat based diet and not suffer from low energy; + Saturated fat is not the major issue; + High fat + high carbohydrate diet = BAD;
+ Carbs are just money makers that are designed to keep you hungry which keeps you buying more of the product; + Fat = fuller for longer in turn eating less calories; + Man kind has been eating the paleo way for 99% of our existence, it is only the past 1% that this has changed. I must admit the stats that Nora spoke about really make you think that paleo is the way to eat but since this event I have seen contradictory information saying that some things in the paleo diet can slow down your metabolism and effect other parts of your body. It is all confusing really isn't it?! My opinion on this hot topic is I agree with the paleo way of eating, it makes sense and some of the above facts make you shake your head, which I did a lot during this event. "We are literally making ourselves sick! I have decided to follow a mostly paleo way of eating, with a couple of exceptions. I will cut back on the amount of dairy that I eat but we all need calcium in our diet, I will cut out wheat/gluten where I can because I know it makes me bloat and doesn't agree with me, and finally I will cut back on grains but I love quinoa and I know it has good things in it. Overall, it all comes back to listening to YOUR body and finding out what works for you. It doesn't matter what works for anybody else. People can preach and talk all they want about different styles of eating but at the end of the day if you can cut back, or even out, on packaged foods you will be a much healthier person. Eat fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood and cook your own meals and snacks from scratch and you are onto your lifestyle change! That's what I'm doing any way...
