Cardio vs Weight Training...

With most people I come across, they either love cardio or they love weight training, very rarely do I see someone that loves both.

Me?...well I am a weights/resistance person, I would much prefer to be 'pumping iron' or doing squats and push ups than running 5km. But I know the importance of getting the right balance with both so that is why I am challenging myself to work up to running 10km.

So I am writing this blog to tell you the importance of getting the right balance of cardio and weight training because you need them both. Cardio is so important for your cardiovascular health and weight training is important for your muscle and bone health so getting a good mix of both each week is important.

I have seen a couple of ladies who increased their weight training and stopped doing as much cardio and they were shocked that they put on weight instead of lost weight. So I advised them to cut back on their weight training to 1-2 times per week and the rest needs to be full cardio.

Surprise surprise, the weight they put on dropped after a few weeks from this change. This is a result of not a good balanced program.

Cardio exercise burns those calories like no one's business but without strong muscles from doing your weights and resistance training you may be holding yourself back from your full cardio potential.

But, it is important to remember that every BODY is different and everybody's goals are different, so what works for one person may not work for another. That is why it is important to listen to your body and get professional advice from a trainer who can work with you to solve your own exercise dilemma.

Send through any questions you may have with your program or exercise in general, I would love to hear from you.

Be happy & healthy,
